Mission Statement

Friends of the Children is a national nonprofit that is impacting generational change by empowering youth who are facing the greatest obstacles through relationships with professional mentors – 12+ years, no matter what.

About This Cause

We are relentless, so they can be resilient. We commit to each child in our program 12+ years, no matter what, and that commitment has never been more critical. Together, we can make sure that all of our youth and families have the support they need to reach their full potential. Third-party evaluation of program graduates shows that: • 83% of our youth graduate with a high school diploma or a GED; • 93% remain free from juvenile justice system involvement; • 98% wait until after their teen years to become parents; and • 92% go on to enroll in post-secondary education, serve our country, or enter the workforce. We begin by finding youth as young as age 4 facing the greatest obstacles. These kids face more in their first few years than many of us will in our lifetimes. If you grow up in the cycle of generational poverty, you may think that you have no future – no potential – that there’s no way out of the world you’re born into. But Friends of the Children tells a different story. We tell these children that they can be healthy, happy, and successful. Each child is paired with a full-time, salaried, highly trained mentor (Friend) for 12+ years, through graduation, no matter what. How do we do it? Here’s a story about William and his Friend, Josh: We provide unconditional love for children like William, a bright, vibrant third grader who loves sports. William was selected for our program from foster care – he’s experienced many foster care homes, multiple school changes, and more transitions than most of us experience in a lifetime. He’s dealing with even more challenges right now, given school closures and required social isolation. Thankfully, he has his Friend, Josh. Josh is working hard to continue supporting William, being that constant presence in his life, no matter what. They are talking on the phone and through video chats, sharing about everything that’s going on, completing school work, and continuing to build a relationship based on love, trust, and hope for the future. There are so many more children, like William, that need a Friend. Today Friends reached thousands of children in over 540 schools across the nation. Our successful model is now in 22 locations, including five sites in Oregon (Portland, Gresham, Klamath Falls, Central Oregon, and Eugene); three sites in California (Antelope Valley, Los Angeles, and San Francisco); three sites in Washington (Seattle, Southwest Washington and Tacoma); Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Detroit, MI; Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN; Harlem and the South Bronx, NY; Salt Lake City, UT; Tampa Bay, FL; and Cornwall, United Kingdom. Friends of the Children has been named the Most Admired Nonprofit in Oregon in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2015 by the Portland Business Journal. Every dollar you invest will return $7 to the community. Not only that, but you will know for sure that you are transforming lives. We hope you will join us by investing in hope and build strength in our community.
