Mission Statement

Crag Law Center provides free and low-cost legal services to people working on the ground to protect our communities, wild places, and climate. We work with activists, environmental groups, and Tribes to protect our forests, fight against fossil fuels, and support communities most impacted by environmental injustice. We are legal aid for the environment.

About This Cause

Most communities don’t have the power or resources that industry does, and not all people have equal voice in the decisions that affect us. But, when communities have the power of a lawyer standing beside them, we can balance the scales of justice. Every dollar you donate helps us provide over $4 million of legal aid a year to conservation groups, communities, and Tribes. As community-based lawyers, we are protecting old-growth forests and watersheds, helping local residents stand up for their communities against corporate bullies, and stopping fossil fuel projects around Portland and throughout the Pacific Northwest. Climate - We focus on opposing fossil fuel infrastructure and pressuring the government to take action to mitigate climate change. Supporting coalition efforts, we help organizations and local residents navigate the complex legal and public decision-making systems. Communities - We support public participation in local decision-making, helping to elevate the voices of those most impacted by governmental decisions. Our work is focused on land use planning, clean air and water, and environmental justice. The Wild - We work with a diverse coalition of conservation clients in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington to advocate for sound forest management, sustainable outdoor recreation, and restoration of native fish and wildlife populations. Emerging Leaders - Since our founding, we have mentored over 180 individuals ranging from high school to law school to community elders. Mentorship opportunities include paid Legal Fellow positions for new attorneys and a variety of paid internships for students ranging from high school to law school, as well as those not affiliated with a school. We focus on developing the skills and social justice leadership of young people from diverse backgrounds who demonstrate a passion for justice and a desire to pursue a career in public interest environmental work. We have recently expanded paid opportunities, helping build a more diverse pipeline of new advocates for environmental justice. “What inspires me most about Crag are the incredible and brilliant people that work there and how they use their passion and energy to help protect the environment. At Crag, I learned how to practice law. Because of them, I have some of the tools in the toolkit I need to take on exploitative industries that are harming the planet and its people.” - Ka'sha Bernard, Staff Attorney at the Center for International Environmental Law and Crag Board President “Crag does not shy away from the tough cases, the ones that will protect my children’s future and provide lasting protection for places we love and cherish. They bring their incredible talents, passion and commitment to work for us every day.” —Julia Olson, Executive Director, Our Children’s Trust “Nobody cares more, works harder, or does more with less than Crag Law Center. They win case after case for you, for me, and for our environment. We simply could not succeed without them.” —Brett VandenHeuvel – former Executive Director, Columbia Riverkeeper
