Mission Statement

The Nick Wilson Charitable Group helps families who have children going through bone marrow transplantation at Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, OR. NWCG helps to provide immediate and compassionate financial support for urgent financial needs encountered by families that are not covered by medical insurance. The support can be used for mortgage payments, rent, hotel costs, car payments, utility bills, food and grocery bills, travel expenses, medical supplies, child care, grief support or any thing that the family needs financial assistance with.

About This Cause

The Nick Wilson Charitable Group (NWCG) began its work in 2005, and is carried out in loving memory of Nick Wilson, who died of complications from cancer treatment when he was just three years old. Nick endured two years of treatments but always seized the opportunity to play, laugh and smile. Nick's family vowed to keep his spirit alive by helping other children and their families going through difficult times. NWCG has several programs, but the most impactful is the Family Grant Program. Once a family is admitted to the Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, they qualify for a Family Grant of $2,000.00. This support can be used towards housing cost, transportation, food and groceries, utilities, medical supplies, counseling as well as many other urgent needs that are not covered by insurance. This support is given in the hopes that families can spend less time worrying about their bills and focus more on the health and well being of not just their child, but the family as a whole. In addition, if the unthinkable happens, and the child passes away, NWCG will also provide some financial support to help with the funeral costs. In addition to the Family Grant program, NWCG provides each family with a Care Kit upon their admittance to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. Each care kit has toys, games, toiletries, a handmade blanket, and a stuffed animal, to help make the long hospital stay a little more comfortable. NWCG also provides financial support towards the lab costs for fertility preservation for these patients so they can look forward towards a future where they may still have the possibility to have children. NWCG also has the Help Today program where food, grocery and gas gift cards are made available to the medical social workers to hand out to needy families who have children in the pediatric oncology unit. Through all these programs, NWCG has endeavored to keep alive Nick's incredible spirit and compassion alive by helping other families finding themselves in similar circumstances.
