Mission Statement
The mission of Marion Ministry and Outreach is to support families of the greater Marion community, especially those facing various hardships, by identifying their needs and engaging volunteers to aid in filling these needs. In this way we serve our fellow community members while offering opportunities for service by willing individuals.
About This Cause
Marion Ministry and Outreach provides short-term assistance to at-risk and economically disadvantaged families, with emphasis on families with small children. Programs include - 1) Financial assistance to aid families in accessing safer housing. This assistance is administered by Marion Ministry and Outreach from grant money received from the Marion Civil Rights Commission. The program's aim is to give families opportunities to move into safer housing conditions, whether the issue is neighborhood conditions or poor housing quality. The program is scheduled to expire in 2025 without continued funding availability. 2) Free emergency supplies of baby diapers and wipes, formula, family hygiene supplies, blankets, clothing and other items are provided to families without qualification. Approximately 20 families per month receive assistance in this manner. Volunteers follow up with recipients. Families in dire financial situations sometimes feel disconnected from their community. Our volunteers aim to overcome the disconnectedness through ongoing contacts, including birthday greetings, Christmas cards, Mothers Day contacts, etc. 3) Family budgeting assistance. Families who receive various types of assistance are encouraged to work with a free financial counselor to help develop a family budget. 4) Marion Ministry and Outreach provides meeting space and promotional assistance for a group counseling program for women suffering from addictive behaviors. Typically, 8 to 10 women are engaged in the first step of recovery in the program. 5) As a community service, Marion Ministry and Outreach sponsors the Heart of Marion Community Choir, volunteer singers and musicians who perform publicly at community events as well as in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. Marion Ministry and Outreach provides space for the federally funded Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC) in our community. This cooperative arrangement allows the two organizations to provide complementary services to families and their children in a common location. Marion Ministry and Outreach is funded entirely through monetary donations and has no paid staff. Our operating costs are low, averaging about $1,000 per month, which includes office rent, utilities and program expenses. All products supplied to families are received through donations by individuals.
