Mission Statement

Concussion is a widely underestimated and misunderstood brain injury that affects tens of millions of people globally each year, many of whom will need rehabilitative care for persistent symptoms. Through risk reduction, education, advocacy, and awareness work, Concussion Alliance provides essential services to stakeholders at every level of concussion care––from patients to providers to support professionals. We envision a world where concussions are as rare as possible, the public knows the proper steps for recovery, and those with persistent symptoms get timely and appropriate treatment from knowledgeable providers.

About This Cause

Concussion Alliance is an education and advocacy nonprofit working to address the concussion epidemic by reducing concussion risk and improving outcomes for those who sustain a concussion. Concussion Alliance develops and provides evidence-based educational resources for concussion awareness and care through our website, newsletters, email outreach, social media, medical partnerships, advanced educational internships, and printed materials. We provide our resources for patients, families, and advocates; healthcare organizations and medical students; and the general public. We also are educating the next generation of healthcare, public health professionals, and health science researchers through our Concussion Education and Advocacy Internship Program. Concussion symptoms are complex and varied; they can include chronic headaches and migraines, dizziness, cognitive and memory dysfunction, new or worsening mental health struggles, extreme fatigue, and light and sound sensitivity. These concussion symptoms can delay return to school, work, and daily activities. This broad set of symptoms can be debilitating even during a standard recovery timeline, which a new consensus establishes as four weeks. Further, anywhere from 15-50% of concussions lead to persistent symptoms, causing an immense amount of global suffering. Most healthcare professionals are not able to stay up to date with best practices for treatment and referral for rehabilitative care, so even patients who get a diagnosis are far from guaranteed to receive accurate education or the help they need. Malayka Gormally and Conor Gormally, a mother and son team, founded the organization when Conor developed persistent symptoms after his fourth concussion. After medical providers had no answers, Malayka and Conor discovered that theirs was a common experience, and they set out to prevent other patients and their loved ones from going through what they went through.
