Mission Statement

The Mission of the Oregon Society of Artists is to promote the visual arts in the diverse communities of our region, with educational and exhibition opportunities for artists at all levels of accomplishment.

About This Cause

In 1926, the Portland Art Museum was beginning to expand its scope to include abstract and surreal artists. The more conservative artists were discouraged by this direction so, to maintain a group of like-minded individuals, they created the Oregon Society of Artists (OSA) Its purpose was to: *help the artists to get their work before the public *meet and discuss mutual problems *provide a place where the artists could exhibit their works under rules the artists made themselves *provide a place where those interested in traditional art, although not artists themselves, might meet with artists. These principles guide us today though we have followed the way of the museum to celebrate diversity both of our community and art created. In the 1950s OSA moved into its permanent location and owns the property outright. We are the only surviving independent arts organization in the Portland area offering classes, workshops, and exhibition space in one facility. OSA provides beginning through advanced classes in a wide variety of traditional and emerging visual art media. We offer: *classes for every level of ability and every age, covering a wide range of media including: watercolor, acrylics, oils, “Procreate” for iPad, sketching, life drawing, sculpture, printmaking, color pencils, pastels, calligraphy, open studios and more, all taught by renowned artists *classes are offered in-person or on Zoom *single day workshops and multi-day weekend workshops are presented two to four times per month. Workshop instructors are nationally known, and many come from across the country to offer new perspectives and opportunities to our local artists *monthly art demonstrations *quarterly seminars on subjects relating to art framing, matting, marketing, etc. an opportunity for artists of all levels to exhibit and sell their work in 12 juried or non-juried shows throughout the year.
