Mission Statement
The YWCA of San Francisco & Marin is part of a worldwide movement dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Established in 1878, our association is one of the oldest and most respected women’s organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our program priorities focus on providing (1) safe, clean, and healthy affordable housing for seniors and disabled persons, (2) economic empowerment for women and girls, and (3) community understanding about racial justice and women’s issues.
About This Cause
The YWCA of San Francisco & Marin was founded in 1878, and is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. For 136 years we have been vocal advocates on behalf of women, girls and their families, offering a rich array of services to help a wide range of community members achieve self-sufficiency. Our organization serves over 2,000 people each year, and current program services include: • Caring for older and disabled immigrant adults with dignity and respect through affordable housing in San Francisco: 97 apartments, 114 residents; • Distributing free food to elderly and disabled community members in San Francisco: 200,000+ pounds distributed annually to about 250 people, with a total retail value savings to this community of over $263,000; • Bridging the digital divide by offering a computer learning center for the young and old in San Francisco; • Empowering women ages 50 and older toward economic self-sufficiency by offering supportive job training and employment services in Marin County: 400+ women served annually ; and • Promoting and memorializing the legacy and impact of women’s achievements in Marin through our annual induction of 4-5 women into the Marin Women’s Hall of Fame.
