Mission Statement
TEL HI’s mission is to enhance the lives of the people in our community. We provide programs and services that promote stability for families, provide opportunities for children and youth to succeed regardless of their socio-economic status, and help aging and older adults remain vital and connected to each other and their communities.
About This Cause
Although our name suggests otherwise, TEL HI primarily serves the Chinatown and North Beach neighborhoods. Serving 3,300 people annually, TEL HI is a trusted neighborhood center that assists our most vulnerable residents. Our population is truly diverse: participants are 75% low-income and represent a wide range of ethnic groups and cultures, with 80% comprising of immigrants from Latin America, Russia, China, and the Middle East. Children and youth (0 to 18 years) make up more than half of our daily visitors, while seniors (65 and over) comprise approximately 30% of service recipients. From delivering top-notch childcare to ensuring that seniors remain healthy, vibrant, and connected, TEL HI tailors its services to meet our population’s diverse needs and strengthen our community. During “normal” times, our free and low-cost programs include: Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers: Our two licensed programs offer quality early childhood education and childcare services for 160 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers (3 months to 5 years old), including our brand-new Mission Bay campus, opening this spring. Children and Youth: Serving over 1300 children and youth annually, TEL HI operates school-based after-school programs for middle and high school students, including the North Beach-Chinatown Beacon Center at Francisco Middle School, one of twenty-seven school-based centers citywide. Younger students benefit from our Elementary School Academy and summer enrichment programs. TEL HI also provides comprehensive STEAM programming for kids in preschool and K-12 grades and manages the youth center at North Beach Place, a mixed-income housing facility. Adults: Our adult programs offer high-quality, low-cost exercise and wellness classes and community-building events. Seniors: Our Senior Program offers nutritious meals, technology and wellness classes, and a variety of workshops for 350 seniors per day. Mirroring what’s happening in communities across the nation, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended the lives of TEL HI’s families and exacerbated the economic divide. When shelter-in-place orders were enacted, our organization rapidly pivoted and changed our operations to address immediate community needs. While most nonprofits closed, TEL HI was among a small handful of organizations that remained open to provide preschool and K-12 childcare services for doctors, nurses, first responders, and other essential workers. Our after-school programs transformed into full-day learning hubs where children could attend virtual classes and receive academic support. TEL HI’s staff delivered meals to seniors and helped local food banks deliver sustenance for 3,000 families in need. In December 2020, Mayor London Breed bestowed TEL HI with a Certificate of Honor for our emergency childcare response.
