Mission Statement

In 1916, leading members of the San Francisco Italian community, such as A.P. Giannini, Marco Fontana and Andrea Sbarboro, established the Italian-American Community Services Agency. They had a dream. Successful in their own lives, these leaders wanted to help their Italian brethren. Italian Community Services provides Bay Area Italian-American individuals and families with trusted resources to help them live healthy, independent and productive lives. We are committed to honoring and preserving the Italian language and culture, with an emphasis on the strength and support that comes from family, community, education and goodwill.

About This Cause

Italian Community Services provides Bay Area Italian-American seniors and families with trusted resources to help them live healthy, independent and productive lives. We are committed to honoring and preserving the Italian language and culture, with an emphasis on the strength and support that comes from family, community, education and goodwill. We provide support to all ages through our referral program, outreach program, educational grants, social and cultural activities, and more. Italian Community Services provides community members with current information and contacts pertaining to varied programs that apply to Italian relocating to the United States. These resources might include information about schools, general regulations about health and vehicle insurance, the requirements for citizenship and the demographics of geographic areas. Seniors and adults with disabilities are equipped with updated data and access details about Homecare, Social Security Income, Medicare/Supplemental insurance, and MediCal as well as options for day centers, long term care facilities, legal assistance, and meals at home or at senior centers. In San Francisco, Case Workers help to coordinate medical and home care, transportation to medical appointments, and completion of necessary paperwork, acting as advocates in the resolution of individual client concerns. In surrounding Bay Area Counties Case Workers collaborate with colleagues who provide service coordination, information and referrals. Agency Case Workers are available to answer questions and provide referrals by telephone. If the caller would prefer face-to-face contact, an appointment may be scheduled or, if the senior in San Francisco is unable to come to the Agency, a Case Worker can go to the home for further care coordination services. Case Workers are available to travel to the home of San Francisco seniors for a confidential assessment of needs. Along with the senior, a care plan is created and the Case Worker can assist with appropriate referrals to other resources in the City. On behalf of seniors residing in surrounding Bay Area Counties, the Agency collaborates with colleagues in those counties to assist with appropriate referrals. We realize that accessing the local service delivery system for seniors can be difficult and time consuming. Our Care Coordination Program can help you determine which programs and services are right for you. This is a program providing ongoing senior oversight and advocacy based service coordination. Our individualized care plans reflect and preserve the senior’s value and lifestyle choices while maximizing opportunities for positive change and maintaining quality of life. Some of our outreach services include: - Italian/English translations pertaining to senior services - Care Coordination for those transitioning from a hospital or rehabilitation center to home - Assistance with setting up appointments at the Italian Consulate - Advocacy for seniors living at home and in care facilities - Navigating government sponsored assistance programs - Connecting seniors to resources in their communities - Providing support to family members - Home visits - Financial Support for those who qualify - Venue space available for Italian Language/Culture theme meetings/events - Supporting Italian Language/Culture clubs at both High School and College level - Hospital visits and nursing home visits - Food assistance via Italian Community Services or Meals on Wheels Italian Community Services also has an Educational Grant Program through which we promote the Italian language and culture through grants that may be available to schools offering Italian language and culture programs. Additionally, we build and sponsor a variety of social and informational programs. Some of the social and cultural activities we've hosted include: - Conversational Italian classes - Crafts - Cooking lessons - Weekly luncheons - Italian card games - Rai Television - Musical performances - Italian Movies - Karaoke - Access to books - Wellness Classes for Seniors - Informational sessions for the ageing continuum We strive to provide the Italian Community of all ages across the Bay Area with opportunities to foster the Italian culture and live happy and healthy lives.
