Mission Statement

A multicultural church in the heart of San Francisco reaching to people from every ethnic, geographic, socioeconomic, and educational background so that we can love God and make His love known.

About This Cause

Robert and Mary Craig founded Glad Tidings Church in 1913. The Craig’s were part of a religious movement at the turn of the century that has become the largest branch of contemporary Protestantism. Their aggressive leadership, clear vision, and servant hearts established Glad Tidings as a center for spiritual renewal in San Francisco, considered then as now an unlikely place for such a work. In 1919, Glad Tidings Bible Institute (GTBI) was founded at the church. This 2-year Bible institute was founded in order to train and equip young ministers to make an impact in their community and the world at large. In that same year, Glad Tidings Church became one of the charter members of the Assemblies of God, Northern California and Nevada District. The church and its Bible school have enjoyed tremendous success throughout its years of association with the Assemblies of God. By 1941, Glad Tidings was one of the largest churches in the nation. GTBI had enrolled more than 2,000 students, many of whom went on to found missions abroad and churches throughout Northern California and the Western United States. In 1950, GTBI relocated to the Santa Cruz Mountains, where it became Bethany University, and Glad Tidings Church remains a staunch supporter of the school born out of its ministry. GT has enjoyed significant growth within the last ten years. Over these years, GT has launched several new programs and expanded others that have been working well. These programs include children’s education clubs; youth leadership development programs; anger management programs; marriage counseling forums; financial planning seminars; parenting symposiums; a music department focused on creating opportunities for children, youth, and adults; senior/retirement home visitation programs; community work projects; and more. With our children’s education clubs ranging anywhere from 60 to 120 children every week, marriage/parenting symposiums being attended by 45 to 50, and our music department numbers swelling to the 100s, our outstanding record of achievement attests for itself. Our staff has doubled in an effort to effectively administer our new programs as well as keep pace with our organization's growing administrative responsibilities. Presently, Glad Tidings Church continues to be a committed member of the Assemblies of God. Fittingly, we also remain committed to our two-part mission of helping the less advantaged in our inner-city neighborhoods and building a church where people of every socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and educational background are welcome – no matter what. Whether it’s assisting a high school drop-out obtain a GED, helping a young man become the first in his family to attend college, or offering a single parent the assistance and support she needs to raise her children, we take joy in being a beacon of hope to our community. Moreover, we have been blessed to see our congregation grow into a wonderful blend of people from all walks of life, truly representative of the City of San Francisco. The future is indeed bright for Glad Tidings Church.
