MECHANICS' INSTITUTE

Mission Statement

The Mechanics’ Institute is the oldest cultural institution in San Francisco and believes that society is better with knowledge. Founded in 1855, today we are a hub for a vibrant library, engaging cultural events and a world renowned chess program.

About This Cause

The Mechanics' Institute library, cultural event center, and chess club located in our 9-story landmark building in the Financial District of San Francisco at 57 Post Street. Founded in 1854 to serve the educational and social needs of mechanics — artisans, craftsmen, and inventors — and their families, the Institute today is a favorite of avid readers, writers, downtown employees, students, film lovers, chess players, and the 21st century nomadic worker in search of a place for literary pursuits, thinking, research and study. People who come to Mechanics' often find a home in the conversations, the quiet, the books, the chess room. Mechanics’ is a place with a deep respect for the life of the mind and the democratic belief that people of all backgrounds can create a better life through learning. In today’s society, such places can be hard to find and worth our support. In addition, Mechanics' has a chess program in schools across San Francisco. We believe that kids like to be challenged. They want to learn and appreciate competition - Mechanics' responds to those needs - through chess. We work with 500 kids in public schools per week. Each year we have a chess tournament that draws hundreds of kids throughout the Bay Area. This youth chess program makes a positive difference in these children's life. We invite everyone to be part of the Mechanics' Institute and, as one supporter said, "becoming a supporter of Mechanics' connects you with the DNA of San Francisco and others who care about this City."
