Mission Statement

Children's Health Council's (CHC) mission is to transform young lives by providing culturally-responsive best-in-class services for learning differences and mental health to families from diverse backgrounds regardless of language, location or ability to pay. CHC specializes in working with families living with ADHD, Learning Differences, Anxiety & Depression and Autism through our two schools, mental health clinics, Schwab Learning Center, and community education and curated online resource library.

About This Cause

Children's Health Council (CHC) has been helping children and families in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties as well as the greater San Francisco Bay Area for more than 60 years. Founded in 1953 by Dr. Esther B. Clark, one of Palo Alto’s first female pediatricians, CHC started as a small organization committed to providing families access to multidiscipline, integrated care for disabled children. CHC's focus has evolved over time to serve children and teens with behavioral, emotional, developmental, and learning challenges. Throughout its history CHC has continued to embrace Dr. Clark’s legacy and carried on her interdisciplinary approach to working with children. CHC serves more than 2,000 families each year, and another 3,000 individuals participate in our free parent and teacher education workshops. CHC’s five major divisions include: • The Center: Provides expert interdisciplinary evaluations, individualized treatment and personalized programs to meet every child’s unique challenges and needs. • Sand Hill School: Works with bright K-7 children, with language-based learning differences such as dyslexia as well as attention and social challenges. • Esther B. Clark School: Therapeutic day school providing transformative education for children in Grades 2-10 struggling with anxiety, depression or other emotional and behavioral challenges. • The Community Clinic: Serves under-resourced families in Santa Clara County in both English and Spanish, ensuring cost isn’t a barrier to getting help. The Community Clinic has two offices, one at Children’s Health Council in Palo Alto and the other in San Jose. • Parent, Teacher, and Professional Education: Offers unique classes onsite from September through May presented by CHC experts in psychology, education, and child development. Signature programs include: Glen Elliott ADHD Program, Early Support Program for Autism (ESPA), Ravenswood Initiative for More Kids, Executive Functioning Coaching, and the new Teen Mental Health Initiative. CHC serves children and teens from early childhood to adulthood and helps kids and families access the help they need regardless of language, learning style, or cost. Nowhere but at CHC can a family be assured of receiving expert interdisciplinary care and multicultural sensitivity from bilingual therapists along with personalized education from caring teachers.
