Our Mission is to build welcoming communities and caring relationships that empower people and restore hope.

About This Cause

Conard House opened in 1960 as San Francisco's first psychiatric halfway house. Its founder was Elaine Mikels (1921-2004). This visionary social worker, her mentor Conard Rheiner and other charter members of the Conard House board filled the unmet basic need for transitional housing alternatives when adults no longer needed institutional care buy lad no place to go. These pioneers in mental health recovery understood that transitional housing alone was not enough to bring about long-term stability and full reintegration into the community. Over the years Conard House developed an array of support services; psychosocial rehabilitation, supportive housing, supportive employment and money management resources. Among the very low-income adults we now serve each year are people with a broad range of serious mental and physical health issues at various stages of recovery, often complicated by chronic substance use.
