Mission Statement
Greenbelt Alliance’s mission is to educate, advocate, and collaborate to ensure the Bay Area’s lands and communities are resilient to a changing climate. We envision a Bay Area of healthy, thriving, resilient communities made up of lands and people that are safe during climate disasters and recover quickly from wildfire, floods, and drought, where everyone is living with nature in new and powerful ways for generations to come.
About This Cause
The Bay Area has a major problem: we aren’t ready for climate change. Increasing wildfires are an example of our lack of preparedness, with more families losing their homes and businesses every year, while our government leaders are still trying to determine what to do and how to effectively respond. Greenbelt Alliance is rising to the challenge by educating people, advocating for bold change, and collaborating to address the climate crisis now. For over 60 years, Greenbelt Alliance has stewarded the Bay Area’s natural landscapes while promoting the growth needed for thriving communities. As a result, almost 3.3 million acres of the Bay Area’s nine counties are protected open spaces. Now, the Bay Area needs critical help as our climate dramatically changes. The path toward this future is complex and more urgent than ever. That’s why we are focusing on data-driven and innovative policy solutions that foster much-needed regional collaboration in order to plan for and invest in resilient communities. Our Approach: 1. Identify climate risks and nature-based resilience opportunities to drive bold climate leadership where we need it the most, right now. 2. Deliver innovative and equitable nature-based policy solutions. 3. Advocate for climate SMART—Sustainable, Mixed, Affordable, Resilient, Transit-oriented—development to create resilient urban and suburban communities.
