Mission Statement

Huckleberry Youth Programs' mission is to educate, inspire, and support underserved youth to develop healthy life choices, to maximize their potential, and to realize their dreams.

About This Cause

Huckleberry Youth Programs first opened its flagship program, Huckleberry’s for Runaways (now Huckleberry House), as an emergency shelter for runaway youth who came to San Francisco during the 1967 “Summer of Love.” Over the last 52 years, Huckleberry has continued to grow and expand its programming in response to the changing and emerging needs of Bay Area youth. Today, Huckleberry provides a continuum of integrated services, all of which are designed to meet four fundamentals necessary for youth to thrive in their transition to adulthood: safety, health, justice, and education. With years of experience, Huckleberry is an expert in providing high-quality, impactful adolescent services. Huckleberry strengthens families and supports young people with services that promote safety in times of crisis, physical and emotional health, social justice in communities facing inequality, and educational success. We seek to empower young people to develop and maintain healthy relationships as well as promote their talents, leadership and health; to assist youth and their families in overcoming the obstacles they may encounter (including substance use, mental health issues, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, violence, social and economic inequities, and abuse); and to help clients in navigating complex welfare, educational, and justice systems. Programs include: ● Huckleberry House, a shelter for runaway and homeless youth ● Counseling provides assessment, crisis intervention, and individual, family and group therapy, embedded in all Huckleberry programs ● Huckleberry Youth Health Centers in San Francisco and Marin provide primary and sexual medical care, health education, mental and behavioral health services ● Huckleberry Wellness Academies prepare Marin and San Francisco youth for college and careers ● Community Assessment & Resource Center (CARC) is the largest juvenile justice diversion program in San Francisco ● Project READY is a juvenile justice prevention program that provides prevention services to at-risk eighth graders before an initial arrest occurs ● Huckleberry Advocacy & Response Team (HART) is a 24-hour response team serving commercially sexually exploited youth. Huckleberry’s clients are high-needs adolescents and transition age youth, who are 10-24 years old. Clients come from underserved neighborhoods in San Francisco and Marin, and many are low-income. In San Francisco, 90% of our direct service clients are youth of color, including 27% Latinx, 24% Asian/Pacific Islander, 21% African American, 13% multiracial, 3% Other, 1% Middle Eastern, and 1% Native American or Native Alaskan. In Marin, approximately 79% of our direct service clients are youth of color, including 64% Latinx, 7% multiracial, 4% Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% African American, 1% Middle Eastern, 1% other. Most recent data from the Traumatic Events Screening Inventory (TESI) indicates that 99% of screened clients screen positive for trauma, including 46% for abuse (physical, sexual, emotional), 71% for loss, 58% for community violence, and 66% for domestic violence. 82% of clients screened endorsed three or more items, indicating that most clients have been exposed to multiple traumas.
