Mission Statement
Almaden Parents' Pre-school (APPS) is a parent participation school with a 50+ year history of providing exceptional education in a supportive, creative and safe environment. Through play-based learning the disciplines of literature, science, art, math, culinary arts, music and creativity are unlocked. Together, parents and teachers create an environment that is positive, safe, and fun so children can grow physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually. At APPS, we help children reach their full potential.
About This Cause
OUR PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS: Almaden Parents' Pre-School's philosophy is based on sequential child development. We believe that by providing children with a variety of age-appropriate play and learning experiences and social activities, they will grow and develop a foundation that will provide the base for all future learning. Guided by teachers and parents, the children are encouraged to explore, experiment, manipulate, and learn from their surroundings at their own level and rate of speed. Through play, the children discover who they are by relating to other children, adults, and the environment. At APPS, we support this philosophy in the following ways: 1) By establishing goals to provide a program rich with open-ended activities, which will enable a child to participate at their present level of development. 2) By creating an environment that is happy, safe, and secure. POSITIVE DISCIPLINE: APPS uses the Positive Discipline approach as presented by Jane Nelsen and Lynn Lott. All teachers are certified Positive Discipline Associates and use the philosophy to guide their interactions with both students and parents. All parents receive Positive Discipline training during the October and April general meeting and in after class conference sessions. Cathy, our Positive Discipline coach, will be available to mentor in every classroom for one week every month. APPS also offers in depth workshops in Positive Discipline for parents, family and community throughout the year. Positive Discipline is about “working with” children and understanding their developmental needs while being kind and firm at the same time. We strive to create an environment where everyone is treated with equal dignity and respect. In these ways we encourage our children to grow physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. INTERCULTURAL PRESCHOOL: What does "intercultural" mean to us? It means we are proud of the fact that our American society is formulated by the mingling of many cultures, both native and those brought to this land by men and women from other parts of the world. Our curriculum explores how music and art have been enriched by the contribution of each culture or ethnic group. At APPS, those cultural enrichments are explored at a preschool level as we seek to emphasize that different cultures can successfully cooperate and grow together within one society.
