About This Cause
The Institute for the Study of Human Knowledge (ISHK) is a 501c(3) educational charity incorporated in 1969. ISHK is dedicated to bringing important research on human nature to the general public, to foster cross-cultural understanding and tolerance through symposia and lectures, and to support these efforts through its website: humanjourney.us and its publication imprints: Malor Books and Hoopoe Books. For 17 years, Hoopoe Books has provided beautifully illustrated teaching-stories to underserved children, mostly in the United States, Canada, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Part of a collection made by the savant Idries Shah from oral and written sources, these universal stories have been told for centuries along the Silk Road, throughout Central Asia and the Middle East. Western educators have noted their unique ability to encourage social-emotional development, thinking skills and perception. To date ISHK has distributed more than 650,000 Hoopoe books to agencies and schools serving at-risk children in the United States, over 110,000 Urdu-Pashto and Urdu-English books in Pakistan, and over 4 million Dari-Pashto and English books to children in Afghanistan. Children’s ability to become literate and verbal is in part due to the lack of books in the home. A recent study of 70,000 students from 27 countries revealed that having books in the home was as good a predictor of children’s educational attainment as parents’ education levels. In fact, access to books was more predictive than the father’s occupation or the family’s standard of living. The greatest impact of book access was seen among the least educated and poorest families.
