About This Cause The Vedanta Society of Berkeley, located in proximity of the UC Berkeley campus, has been a cornerstone in promoting India’s cultural and spiritual heritage in the Pacific Bay Area for over 85 years. Established by a group of dedicated students inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s visit in 1900, Vedanta Society Berkeley has become a prominent center for the study and practice of Vedanta that emphasizing the exploration of spirituality and the science of manifesting individual potential. With a sub-center in San Jose, Vedanta Society Berkeley extends its reach to a broader community, fostering the teachings of Vedanta that advocated by Swami Vivekananda, the revered 19th-century philosopher and humanist. Focus and Offerings of Vedanta Society Berkeley The Vedanta Society Berkeley advocates individual and societal evolution through a balanced focus on Education, Practice, and Service. By offering classes, meditation, and community outreach, Vedanta Society Berkeley encourages people to understand and practice Unity in diversity or Oneness of existence, Manifestation of potential divinity, and Service to man is service to God in alignment with Vedantic teachings, fostering individual evolution and the broader community. Education: Scholarly Lectures: In collaboration with the Institute of South Asian Studies at UC Berkeley, Vedanta Society Berkeley organizes lectures by renowned scholars who explore how their disciplines can help individuals unlock their potential. Our Sunday lectures cover Vedanta philosophy, spirituality, and related subjects, welcoming participants from all faiths and backgrounds. Scriptural Classes: We offer teachings from timeless scriptures worldwide that evolve human consciousness, sense of unity, and harmony. Online Resources: Our website (www.vedantaberkeley.org) and social media channels (YouTube, Facebook (meta), Instagram) provide access to enriching teachings. Library: Vedanta Society Berkeley maintains reference libraries in Berkeley and San Jose, allowing members to deepen their understanding of various world faiths. Practice: Counseling: The Minister-in-Charge offers personal counseling and practical guidance through in person interviews and online outreach through our website and zoom. Meditation: Our sanctuary is open for prayer and meditation with evening Vesper services. Besides summer meditation camp is held in San Jose, and ‘Yogadharana’ featuring an hour of guided meditation and spiritual reading followed by Q and A, is held on every Wednesday from 7:30 pm to 9pm in San Jose. Cross-Cultural and Interfaith Programs: Vedanta Society Berkeley actively participates in interfaith meetings and organizes events celebrating significant cultural occasions, including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve event, and New Year’s Day. We also host spiritual gatherings throughout the year. Children’s Cultural Retreat: Our programs for children from different ethnic groups promote art, culture, and other soft values through engaging activities that involve their parents. Teachers from our Society visit and lecture different schools and colleges to teach philosophy, culture and spirituality. Service and Philanthropic Activities: • Our Society is an active partner of Interfaith blood donation camps • Members of our Society volunteer regularly to Silicon Valley Second Harvest Food Bank programs • Our Society is an active partner of the Holiday Giving Tree initiative. Our Society collects and presents the gifts. • Our Society organizes Donates life enriching value-oriented books to California correctional facilities
