Mission Statement

“Tahoe Youth and Family Service’s mission is to empower youth, families, and individuals through comprehensive behavioral health treatment, housing programs, and supportive services to promote well-being and independence.”

About This Cause

Tahoe Youth and Family Services was founded in 1971 as a community response to a growing heroin overdose epidemic among youth in SLT. TYFS operated as a drop-in center for youth that included a drug diversion program. TYFS then began offering counseling and substance abuse treatment programs after recognizing that homeless drop-in center clients often had underlying mental health and substance use issues and that accessible mental health services were lacking in South Lake Tahoe, CA. The IRS recognized Tahoe Youth and Family Services as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in July 1975 and is still the only provider of services for a full continuum of care for homeless youth in South Lake Tahoe. As one of the nation’s first organizations serving runaway and homeless and their families as a pilot project funded under the first FYSB-funded Basic Center Program grant in 1975, Tahoe Youth and Family Services has decades of expertise and experience providing shelter, housing assistance, supportive services, case management, and counseling for youth and their families.
