We provide a strong academic foundation, foster skills to effect change, and develop courageous and conscientious learners from all backgrounds. We inspire students to advance equity and inclusion, to act with compassion and integrity, and to pursue a lifelong passion for learning.
About This Cause
Live Oak School is an independent K-8 day school in San Francisco. We were founded in 1971 by a forward-thinking group of parents and teachers who believed that most significant learning occurs through direct interaction with people, places, things and ideas. Originally a K-5 school, Live Oak added a middle school program in 1992. After ten years in its original location on Ocean Avenue, and a subsequent twenty years on Diamond Street, Live Oak moved to a newly remodeled, much larger site in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. In addition to providing a library and enhanced facilities for science, technology, art, music and drama, the new building allowed the expansion of the middle school through the addition of a second class in each grade. At Live Oak School we understand that the best learning happens when students are actively engaged in the process—thinking deeply, exploring ideas, and trying on strategies for solving problems. Our approach is deeply rooted in the progressive tradition, centered on the students that fill our classrooms, and informed by the opportunities that will define our graduates’ lives in the twenty-first century. Eagerly arriving at our gates every morning, our students provide a daily reminder of our mission to support the potential and promise of each of them. In a joyful community where they are known well, students are comfortable advocating for themselves and others, seeking new perspectives, and taking the healthy risks that result in deep and lasting learning. We recognize that students bring a wealth of experiences, backgrounds, talents, abilities, and interests to school each day, and that they learn in a variety of ways. Embracing this diversity, our faculty designs a rich and challenging academic program that is relevant to the community and responsive to each student.
