Mission Statement
San Francisco Study Center has been evolving as a community service provider since 1972. At the dawn of the neighborhood movement, we were a resource for community organizers, providing public records research, grant-writing and a City Hall newsletter. Now, Study Center assists in two main areas: fiscal sponsorship/financial management and publishing, which includes Central City Extra Newspaper. Study Center's mission is to help organizations succeed, which is why our range of services covers all necessary bases.
About This Cause
San Francisco Study Center has evolved from a seed-money startup in 1972 to five years of general support from foundations, and then, starting in 1984, to self-sufficiency through fee for service in editorial & graphics and publishing & distribution, and fiscal sponsorship. Study Center fiscally sponsors dozens of projects that provide a spectrum of services from the arts to human services. Fiscal Sponsorship Before we sponsor a project, we want to be convinced of the need for the service and know that it has community support, a realistic game plan and a committed staff. Study Center offers its sponsored projects: Budget development and tracking Tracking and payment of vendor invoices Personnel administration including payroll and benefits administration Maintenance of individualized general ledgers for each project Contract management, including invoicing and reporting to funders Individualized monthly statements Management of organizational insurance requirements Financial Management Many community services, including 501(c)(3) nonprofits, can use a fiscal sponsor, not just startups needing incubation. It's more cost-effective to hire a fiscal intermediary to manage your finances if your annual budget is $500,000 or less. For the 10% your pay a fiscal sponsor, you can't buy the services of a bookkeeper, accountant, auditor and human services personnel necessary to operate a half-million-dollar community service. You can't have all that expertise on staff for 10% of your budget or $50,000 a year. That might cover one professional's salary. But what about the 30% in benefits. And the need for more than one area of administrative expertise.
