Mission Statement
Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony, founded in 1966, offers a challenging and exciting orchestral music experience to talented young musicians. Scholarships are offered to youth on a needs basis for the orchestral program as well as our summer chamber workshop and our Chamber Academy.
About This Cause
The Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony was founded in 1966 after a highly successful summer music camp. In the almost 50 years since then, hundreds of young classical musicians have participated in the orchestral program. Our organization is the only pre-professional orchestra in the county, and as such has served as a training ground for talented young musicians. Thousands of fifth graders have attended the joint concerts we present in collaboration with the SC County (adult) symphony, many of these children have never been exposed to classical music! As a result of the cutback in funding for the arts in the school system, it is more critical than ever that we insure the viability of our orchestra, and that we make it affordable for all talented students. In response, we have launched 2 new programs in the past 12 months: our summer chamber workshop, and our chamber academy. The summer workshop is a week-long intensive immersion in chamber music for groups of 2 - 4 students. Professional coaching is provided and the week culminates in a concert for students and their families. This program just completed its second successful year, and attracts young musicians from all over the bay area. Our chamber academy launches in September 2014. We are very excited to offer our students an opportunity to hone their skills at playing in groups. Distinct from orchestral performance, in a chamber group each player has a unique and important voice. For young musicians just discovering their art, nothing is more powerful than playing in a small chamber group. Despite the challenges of recruiting new students and making ends meet, we hope to be around still another 50 years, and playing strong!
