Mission Statement
Pacific Legal Foundation (PLF) was established on March 5, 1973. It is the nation's first and most successful public interest legal organization that fights for limited government, private property rights, individual rights and a balanced approach to environmental protection. PLF distinguishes itself from other freedom-based legal organizations by operating a litigation program that addresses a broad spectrum of issues that impact fundamental liberty.
About This Cause
PLF's primary mission is to engage in litigation. Like a private law firm, PLF represents clients who are plaintiffs or defendants in lawsuits. However, PLF's practice focuses on individuals who are challenging governmental entities that seek to limit, curtail, or abolish their individual and constitutional rights. PLF selects cases that have the potential to set broad precedents, so that all Americans can benefit from the cases it litigates. PLF has a secondary mission of educating the public about the public policy implications of court decisions. PLFattorneys develop epertise in many areas of the law, and they are encouraged to speak to groups and organizations, write editorials and blogs, and give presentations at seminars, policy panels, and legislative and agency hearings. PLF represents everyday American citizens who run into legal problems with governmental bodies at the local, state, and national level. PLF accepts clients who cannot afford private legal representation, or whose financial stake in a case is so minimal that the matter does not warrant hiring a private attorney, yet raises a legal issue with important public policy implications. As a general rule, PLF does not take cases in which clients are seeking money damages. While no legal organization, private or otherwise, can boast of a flawless record, PLF has earned an impressive track record of court successes across a broad array of state and federal courts, including seven consecutive victories in the United States Supreme Court. PLF is one of the nation's staunchest defenders of individual rights in our nation's courts and adheres to one philosophy: we never give up. PLF is committed to seeing the country return to first principles of limited government and robust individual rights. For four decades, PLF has consistently obtained the support of attorneys and donors who are committed to these goals, and PLF will continue to carry on this mission as long as it has the capability.
