Mission Statement
Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) transforms lives by helping people build skills and find work to achieve economic mobility. Centered on racial equity, with an impact goal of supporting people on a path of economic mobility, JVS prioritizes serving people historically excluded from educational and employment opportunities. In partnership with CBOs, government agencies, and employers, we provide skills training, paid on-the-job training, wraparound support, and placement services so people can launch careers and prosper.
About This Cause
Founded in 1973 in response to recent Jewish college graduates who were struggling to find employment during a recession, JVS is a secular, nonsectarian, nonprofit organization that serves the entire Bay Area community (and more recently, the Inland Empire), and is grounded in our Jewish Community origins. JVS practices the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (to repair the world) by helping underrepresented, unemployed, and underemployed people build skills, make connections, and find work, in order to transform their lives and strengthen the entire community. JVS has evolved to respond to the changing needs of unemployed people, and has significantly expanded to address the barriers faced by individuals historically excluded from educational and employment opportunities. In 2023 we celebrate our 50th Anniversary and are proud to have served over 100,000 adults and youth to date. JVS serves approximately 1,500 people annually through career exploration, skills training, paid work-based learning, job search support, and job placement services. JVS’s programs operate across 3 strategies: (1) Career Pathways Programs, (2) Job Search Accelerator, and (3) High School and Bridge programs. We have focused our training programs to align with the fastest growing industries in the area with the most significant number of middle-wage jobs including healthcare, technology, and utilities/skilled trades. These programs address the negative impacts of the region’s profound and growing income inequality, which creates considerable obstacles for job seekers to access high quality employment at family-sustaining wages. JVS envisions a California where everyone has access to opportunity and prosperity. We have already achieved outsized, transformative impact through our combination of high-quality programs, a data-driven approach for all aspects of program development, delivery, and improvement, and by cultivating cross-sector, public-private partnerships. Today, our placed job seekers are increasing their earnings by 126% four years after programming (over their pre-JVS earnings). We want to make that opportunity accessible to many more of the millions of Californians who need it. JVS’s priority is to address one of the greatest challenges we face as a region and as a nation: inequality across income, access, and opportunity, by serving people and communities who have traditionally been excluded from educational and economic opportunities. Barriers to economic mobility are complex, as the problem is not just unemployment but deep inequality that cuts across a stark racial divide. With 50 years of experience, we understand that the solutions necessary for extreme and increasing inequality are multi-fold, and we also know how important it is for those who come to JVS to be able to access high-quality employment and good jobs (and to be able to advance within them). We equip our clients with the skills needed to access high-growth career path employment and build long-term career resiliency.
