Mission Statement
Shanti Project exists to enhance the health, quality of life and well-being of people with terminal, life-threatening or disabling illnesses or conditions. Through a continuum of services, including in-home and onsite patient and care navigation, emotional and practical support and preserving the human-animal bond, Shanti strives to achieve the highest medical and quality of life outcomes for San Francisco’s most vulnerable.
About This Cause
Shanti is a pioneering nonprofit that builds human connections to reduce isolation, enhance health and well-being, and improve quality of life. Shanti provides compassion, connection, and community to people experiencing inequities and socioeconomic, racial, cultural, linguistic, and logistical barriers to care. Shanti reaches more than 2,000 San Francisco residents each year with our client-centered programs, which include HIV Programs, Women's Cancer Program, LGBTQ+ Aging & Abilities Support Network, Peer Advocate Care Team, and Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS). Our free, holistic services include care navigation, case management, client advocacy, education and referral to various social services, community-building and wellness activities, interpretation/translation, and comprehensive companion animal support. Founded in 1974 by Dr. Charles A. Garfield at the UCSF Cancer Institute, Shanti was one of the first volunteer organizations in the United States to provide support to people with life-threatening illness. Shanti then became one of the world’s very first community-based organizations to help support people diagnosed with HIV/AIDS during the epidemic’s early days. As community needs have evolved over the past several decades, we have expanded our programming to bring our unique, internationally recognized model of care to various populations as they face obstacles to their health and well-being.
