Mission Statement
Legal Assistance to the Elderly's mission is to provide free legal services to San Francisco's elders and adults with disabilities who are at risk of losing their housing, healthcare or income, or are victims of physical or financial abuse. This work helps to keep San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents safe, financially stable, and housed.
About This Cause
Legal Assistance to the Elderly (LAE) was incorporated in 1979 by a group of volunteer attorneys working to address the unmet legal needs of San Francisco elders. In 2003, LAE expanded our services to also serve disabled adults. Today, we continue this same mission, every year providing free legal services to over 1600 seniors and adults with disabilities from every neighborhood in San Francisco. About 90% of our clients are seniors and 10% are adults with disabilities. Our staff consists of the Executive Director, twelve attorneys, two paralegals, a paralegal/administrative assistant and a volunteer receptionist. LAE provides services in Mandarin, Cantonese, Toishanese, Spanish, Korean and in September 2019 Russian. While our clients reflect the ethnic diversity of the City, they struggle with poverty as 98% of our clients being considered indigent under California State law and the majority earn $1000 dollars or less each month. Our primary practice areas include: Eviction Defense/Housing Retention, Reasonable Accommodation Requests/, Income Support and Benefits Advocacy, Physical and Financial Elder Abuse Prevention, Healthcare Access and Preservation, Consumer Debt Collection Defense, End of Life Planning, and Conservatorship Defense. LAE’s program is designed to keep San Francisco’s seniors and adults with disabilities safe, financially stable, accessing benefits and housed through legal advocacy. We are the only legal services organization in San Francisco that focuses solely on the legal needs of elders and adults with disabilities.
