Mission Statement
Leading the fight to end hunger, in partnership with our community and in service of our neighbors in need.
About This Cause
The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is currently serving approximately 270,000 people in need every month and distributed over 40 million pounds of food last year, almost half of it fresh produce. Our administrative overhead and fundraising cost is approximately 4%. We provide food assistance to children, seniors, homeless people, families in crisis, people with health issues, the disabled, and working poor families. The Food Bank also raises community awareness of hunger through nutrition education and anti-hunger advocacy. We engage in robust CalFresh (SNAP) outreach to connect people with this underutilized food resource. The Food Bank supports over 250 member agencies (churches, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) and runs nine direct service programs of its own: Food Assistance Program (for all low-income people), Senior Food Program (age 55 and over), Food for Children (families with children age 4 through 6), Extra Helpings (the chronically ill), Farm 2 Kids (fresh produce at elementary schools), Community Produce Program (fresh produce in low-income neighborhoods), School Pantries (in middle schools and high schools) and Harvest to Home, which brings fresh produce to low-income housing developments. We have recently begun a pilot Food as Medicine project, where healthcare providers can “prescribe” nutritious foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, which patients can receive onsite from a mobile food pantry. Our direct service programs are run by Food Bank staff with the help of dedicated volunteers from throughout the community. Volunteers also help (sorting food, warehouse assistance and special projects) in both the Concord and Fairfield warehouses. We average over 500 volunteers each month, who donated a total of over 100,000 hours in FY 2019-20. We assist the community by conducting food drives and collecting other donated food. We purchase, store, transport and distribute food to those in need. We also provide education by distributing recipes and other nutrition information. All of our varied activities are aimed at alleviating food insecurity for clients in the short term, and in the long run ending hunger in our community.
