Mission Statement
The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the ocean.
About This Cause
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a voice for ocean conservation through our comprehensive marine science research, our engagement with environmental policy, and our informal science education programs. In 2024, we will celebrate our 40th anniversary as one of the most respected aquariums in the United States. To date, we have inspired over 69 million visitors in learning about ocean science and conservation through our state-of-the-art exhibits and interpretations of marine life and habitats. Our marine conservation work inspired designation of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary – the largest protected ocean area in the continental United States. Located along the coast of Monterey Bay in California, the Aquarium provides extraordinary views of the Bay and allows visitors to engage directly with the local habitat and shoreline. Inside, our visitors can explore 200 exhibits and nearly 80,000 plants and animals, showcasing the habitats and sea life of one of the world's richest and most diverse marine regions. Exhibits introduce visitors to coastal wetlands, kelp forests, and the open sea. Most recently – in the spring of 2022 – we opened our exhibit "Into the Deep: Exploring our Undiscovered Ocean." This groundbreaking exhibition was developed in partnership with the Monterey Bay Research Institute and allows guests to see and learn about the mysterious animals found in the deepest regions of the sea. The Aquarium also conducts vital research that is helping to protect key species, including sea otters, sharks and bluefin tuna. Over the past 38 years, we've recovered 935 stranded sea otters, including 70 surrogate-reared pups, developing effective methods to guide the highest quality response and care to live-stranded sea otters. Our Seafood Watch program, established in 1999, assesses fishing and aquaculture practices worldwide with the goal of cultivating a more sustainable seafood industry. We've rated more than 85% of the seafood on the U.S. market so that businesses have the information they need to source responsibly. The Aquarium is also a co-founder of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership, which is a collaboration across the U.S. committed to advancing conservation of the nation's oceans and inland waters. Through our work advancing science-based environmental state and federal policies, we play a leading role in the fight for marine protection. Education is a crucial element of the Aquarium's mission. We are dedicated to fostering a conservation ethic in young people and our programs include conservation-focused field trips, out-of-school programs for teens that increase their understanding of marine science and improve their college and career readiness, and instruction for teachers in developing crucial knowledge, skills, and tools so that they in turn can work to increase their students' environmental literacy. Our mission to inspire conservation of the ocean is achieved through our wonderful exhibitions, cutting-edge research, policy advocacy work, and educational programs, but it is made possible by the community of loyal, committed members and donors who support our work. We commit each day to live up to our reputation as a trusted guide to the ocean's ecosystems and a persistent advocate for improving the health of those ecosystems. Through our consistent pursuit of excellence and innovation and the commitment of our donors, founders, board of trustees, senior management team and expert staff, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is helping to turn the tide on ocean health.
