FVLC provides free legal and 24-hour crisis intervention services that support domestic violence survivors and their children in Alameda County. We also work with youth to prevent teen dating violence.

About This Cause

FVLC is working to end domestic violence in Alameda County. Our holistic approach integrates comprehensive protection and prevention services for abuse survivors with efforts to address and change barriers for survivors within the legal, health, education, and criminal justice systems. As one of California’s oldest agencies serving abuse survivors, FVLC is recognized as a leader in the community in delivering exceptional services and advocating for long-term social change for survivors. We are a multicultural organization providing equal access for all our services including language access provided by our bilingual staff and our confidential interpreter program. Legal Services: We provide free family law attorney service for domestic violence victims in Alameda County and referrals for free legal services in other jurisdictions. We provide legal information, paperwork preparation, court accompaniment, and attorney representation for domestic violence victims who are seeking civic restraining orders, child custody, visitation, support and divorce involving an abusive spouse. Criminal Justice Advocacy: FVLC staffs a team of advocates who work closely with Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda police departments and the Alameda County Sherriff’s Department in order to enhance victim safety and improve law enforcement response to domestic violence. Advocates review all domestic violence related police reports from these jurisdictions and pro-actively contact victims listed on the reports to offer support and services. Crisis Intervention and Support: Trained, compassionate advocates are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide crisis intervention and safety planning, and meaningful referrals to counseling and other supportive services. FVLC’s Mobile Response Team provides on-site response at medical sites and police scenes and emergency relocation assistance for survivors in immediate danger. Relationship Abuse Prevention (RAP) Program: The R.A.P. program educates, engages, and empowers teens to build healthy relationships. This youth-led program strives to end dating violence by providing leadership development to youth, using creative strategies to promote healthy relationships among young people, and creating community environments that encourage and support those relationships. The program explores the interrelated nature of violence in the home, in schools, in society and in the media. Youth are taught how to recognize the warning signs of an abusive relationship, how racism and sexism are linked to violent behavior, and how to resolve conflicts in a peaceful manner. Healing Emotions and Loss (HEAL) Program: The HEAL Program offers free parent/child psychotherapy to help the youngest victims of domestic violence, and the parent who cares for them, heal from the trauma of their experience. With a focus on children five and younger, FVLC’s psychologists support their recovery and guide them in establishing supportive bonds with each other. The intensive therapeutic support helps put both the parent and child on track for a healthy future.
