Mission Statement

Environmental Volunteers promotes the understanding of and responsibility for the environment through hands-on science education.

About This Cause

Environmental Volunteers’ (EV) mission is to promote the understanding of and responsibility for the environment. EV addresses unmet environmental educational needs in San Mateo County and Santa Clara County. Our school programs build science and environmental literacy skills and help develop the next generation of environmental stewards and scientists. The mission of the Environmental Volunteers - The "EV" - is to promote the understanding of and responsibility for the environment through hands-on science and nature education. The EV was founded in 1972 by a group of citizens concerned about preserving the San Francisco Bay for future generations. Together they created a small, hands-on program and recruited volunteers to take school children to the Bay so they could experience it, understand it, enjoy it, and grow to take care of it. Almost five decades later, the EV has emerged as a leading natural science provider that engages tens of thousands of diverse students each year across Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Our comprehensive curricula now extend beyond their original focus on the San Francisco Bay, to cover timely environmental science topics of global and regional significance such as water science, conservation, energy, and natural resources. In 2012, the EV completed a $3.8 million capital campaign to restore the historic Sea Scout building in the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve. The building, renamed the "EcoCenter," is now open to the public and serves as a science and nature learning center for the community. The EcoCenter has significantly increased our visibility in the community as well as the scope of services we provide. As a result we now serve an annual total of nearly 13,000 people, and offer science and nature learning for all ages, including toddlers, teens, families, and seniors. Our program model involves three coordinated and reinforcing strategies: 1. Building Science Skills We provide elementary schools with classroom and field trip programs that help teachers meet the Next Generation Science Standards and help students develop their environmental literacy. 2. Inspiring a Love of Science and Nature At our EcoCenter, we provide environmental education opportunities including after-school field science programs, Spanish language programming, community science activities, interactive technology stations, docent-led and self-guided tours, nature art exhibitions, and public education events for visitors of all ages. 3. Training Science and Environmental Educators Our programs are delivered by dedicated volunteers from the local community who receive a minimum of 50 training hours in the natural sciences, environmental pedagogy, and youth development plus up to 24 additional hours in site-specific field study training. We also offer enhanced training on working with English Language Learner (ELL) students, who represent 57% of the students we serve. Sprout Up joined Environmental Volunteers in 2019 to expand access to environmental education across the country by growing Sprout Up’s college chapters. Our shared mission is to inspire a love for science and the protection of nature. Sprout Up's environmental science & sustainability program connects teams of college-student instructors with 1st and 2nd grade classrooms for weekly activities, experiments, and discussions that explore the relationship between humans and the natural world. In the past decade, Sprout Up has grown from teaching 25 students in a single classroom in Santa Barbara to teaching more than 30,000 students across California and in New York City! Sprout Up has also provided leadership development and training to over 3,500 college-student volunteers across nine active college chapters.
