Mission Statement

To educate and inspire the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on science and storytelling.

About This Cause

Environmental Volunteers’ (EV) is an eco-education organization based in Palo Alto. We serve elementary school students, primarily in Title 1 schools, across the Bay Area, around California and New York City. Since its founding in 1972, EV has served 500,000+ students in 15+ school districts across California and New York City. In the Bay Area, we engage thousands of diverse students across Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. EV’s programs are designed to build environmental literacy skills and cover timely environmental science topics of global and regional significance such as water science, conservation, energy, natural resources and climate change. We help fill the nature science gaps in underserved schools and communities. However, it’s not just what we teach, but how we teach it that makes EV special! We deliver hands-on environmental programs through hundreds of passionate community and college volunteers. These highly trained volunteers don’t just deliver lessons but also inspire and serve as mentors to young students. Sprout Up, our college program, has provided leadership development and training to over 3,500 college-student volunteers across nine active college chapters. If you’d like to volunteer with us, just reach out! EV’s home is the historic Sea Scout building in the Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve. The building, called the EcoCenter, is now open to the public and serves as a science and nature learning center for the community.
