Mission Statement

W.O.M.A.N., Inc. supports survivors of domestic violence and their loved ones along their healing journeys, bridging value-rich networks designed to address intersections of violence. Ultimate Impact: We work toward collective liberation; everyone deserves to feel safe in their homes, in their bodies and in their communities.

About This Cause

With over four decades of experience and evolution in and with our San Francisco community, W.O.M.A.N., Inc. provides survivor-centered care for those impacted by domestic violence (DV) and their loved ones. The organization’s core strategies include: - Healing and Stabilization Support Groups (focus of request): W.O.M.A.N., Inc. 's nonjudgmental support groups allow survivors to connect with peers, reduce isolation, and build a support network. Unique to W.O.M.A.N., Inc., we offer both a “DV 101” group and more in-depth groups to meet survivors at differing stages of their journeys - e.g. groups focusing on folks who have left their relationships, but are having trouble starting their healing story. Further, our groups provide pathways for survivors to build community, support other survivors, and become involved with the organization, helping guide its services and vision. - Domestic Violence Support Hotline: Trained advocates provide crisis intervention, peer counseling, and emergency referrals 24 hours a day on a multilingual crisis line. W.O.M.A.N., Inc. also anchors the community by using our hotline to provide after-hours access to advocates on behalf of partner organizations. - Domestic Violence Information and Referral Center: Our innovative, online interactive community network allows domestic violence service providers and member agencies statewide to share, network, and access updated information in real-time so that effective resources and referrals are offered to survivors. - Peer Counseling: Drop-in peer counseling services include crisis intervention, peer counseling and support, shelter information, and plans on how to stay safer (both in-person and virtual services are available). - Therapy: Intensive support is provided for survivors and their loved ones as they deal with the extensive and often devastating emotional effects of domestic violence. - Community Education: We provide community education about domestic violence at schools, libraries, businesses, community events, and in digital formats such as our website, blog, and podcast. - Volunteer Recruitment and Training: Volunteers are trained to support our work on the support line, in community outreach, in administration, and in fundraising (using a hybrid online/in-person training model). - Latinx Program: Culturally responsive and humble therapy, peer counseling, support groups, and other services and resources are provided in Spanish by staff members that are predominantly women of color. - Echando Pa’lante (Moving Forward): Ongoing, Spanish-language, survivor-led group of graduates of our Latinx program who work as ambassadors of the organization offer outreach, education, training, and advocacy to prevent future violence, as well as helping the agency guide its services. This group is also a continuing lesson in participant leadership and breaking down the hierarchy between organization and community. W.O.M.A.N., Inc. has served the San Francisco Bay Area in its mission to end domestic violence since 1978. We are a non-profit that supports survivors by assisting them in ending the cycle of violence in their lives. Survivors are experiencing increased mental health challenges, many of which were exacerbated by physical isolation during COVID-19 and its various lockdowns. During this time, we saw our service provision more than double in 2020. While service provision numbers have leveled out, they have yet to go back to their pre-COVID levels. Last year, we answered over 10,000 calls on our domestic violence support line and welcomed over 250 survivors of DV into our healing + stabilization program. All services are provided in English and in Spanish, and we
