Mission Statement
The Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries support the Santa Cruz Public Libraries through fundraising, volunteer services, and advocacy. The Friend’s goal is to create stronger neighborhoods and a culturally enriched county through accessible and diverse library programs.
About This Cause
Friends annually support the Libraries’ programs for underserved children, socio-psychological wellness of teens, school readiness, incarcerated youth, summer learning, bookmobile outreach, and cutting edge resources for all students. In the last five years, the Friends’ have contributed over $1.2 million to Library programs, including as sole supporter of READ reading comprehension tutoring program. Recent successes include - 348 Summer Reading programs were attended by 7,871 people- 1,411 children ages 0-11 achieved 5 hours of reading - 992 children and 205 teens achieved the 20-hour reading goal -The Santa Cruz Public Library’s Jail Reach team (Boundless Minds) built a library and offered literacy programs in Juvenile Hall -Rising Scholars Program supporting justice-impacted students at Cabrillo College secured laptops for students who are now better equipped to succeed. Nine of our ten Santa Cruz Public Library Branches have been renovated or rebuilt since 2016. The Friends’ Realizing the Promise Capital Campaigns raised over 2.6 million dollars to supplement library bond Measure S tax dollars between 2020-2023 – As a result of Friends’ fundraising, five library branches were successfully renovated and reopened.
