Mission Statement
Meals on Wheels of Alameda County raises money to support the five local Meals on Wheels (MOW) programs in Alameda County. MOW programs prepare and deliver delicious and nutritious meals to our homebound senior neighbors and also perform safety/wellness checks. Many of the people we serve are low-income individuals who might not otherwise eat and half live alone and would otherwise have no human interaction in their entire day. We provide food and friendship; we nourish the body and soul. Please support MOW today!
About This Cause
Nationally, 1 in 9 seniors experiences hunger each day. In Alameda County, 3/4 of our clients are over 75 and more than 1/2 live alone sometimes making our driver the only person they will see all day. 1/3 are recuperating from a recent hospital stay and the vast majority live at or below the poverty line (many trying to live on less than $1,000 per month). This forces many older adults to have to choose between rent, lights, medication or food. Malnourishment is a very common problem; more than 1/4 of all E.R. patients are seniors, many of whom are there due to nutrition-related ailments. Each week, nearly 2,100 low-income, home-bound seniors in Alameda County receive not only delicious and nutritious meals, but also warm smiles, companionship and safety and wellness checks from staff and volunteers of five local Meals on Wheels (MOW) service providers. These agencies enable our senior neighbors to retain their independence and stay in their homes where they want to be. At a rate of only $9 per meal (which includes cost of ingredients, preparation of fresh meals and delivery), MOW is an incredibly cost-effective solution. In fact, for the cost of a one day hospital stay, MOW can nourish a senior for an entire year and save taxpayers money by keeping seniors healthy and out of the hospital.
