Mission Statement

Only half of Mount Diablo’s wilderness is preserved. The other half is at risk of being lost to development forever. We work to preserve, defend and restore the remaining natural lands for people and wildlife to enjoy. Save Mount Diablo's mission is to preserve Mount Diablo's peaks, surrounding foothills and watersheds through land acquisition and preservation strategies designed to protect the mountain's natural beauty, biological diversity and historic and agricultural heritage; enhance our area's quality of life; and provide recreational opportunities consistent with protection of natural resources.

About This Cause

Reassembling the Diablo Wilderness… for the community, for the wildlife, and for the future… Our Vision Save Mount Diablo preserves, defends and restores Mount Diablo for wildlife habitat, public recreation and scenic beauty for our communities and future generations to enjoy. Our vision is the permanent preservation of the entire 180,000 acres of Diablo wilderness which is bounded by Suisun Bay and the Delta to the north, the San Ramon Valley to the west, the Livermore Valley to the south and through the Altamont Pass. Our History Since 1971, Save Mount Diablo and our allies have been successful in increasing open space on and around Mount Diablo from 6,788 acres to more than 110,000 acres in 40 parks and preserves. However, nearly half of the mountain remains at risk with an additional 70,000 acres threatened by development. The mountain and its foothills are home to more than 900 plants and animals, with amazing views and numerous landscapes it is a paradise for hikers, equestrians, campers, families and friends. Seven million people live within an hour of Mount Diablo, and hundreds of thousands of new residents will be moving into Contra Costa and Alameda counties in the next 30 years. This urbanization and development will risk the loss of wildlife corridors, ecosystems, and recreational opportunities forever, unless we act now. What’s Changed? The economic climate of the past several years have led to a drying up of public funds for preservation: State Parks are not acquiring more land, barely able to continue to manage their current holdings; bond funds are depleted and the chance of new bonds being passed in the near future is nil. At the same time, opportunities to acquire have increased. Our business model of assisting agencies to acquire land and transferring lands we own to them is no longer sustainable. Instead we need to plan for acquisition and long term management – both requiring substantial capital. How We Work Our conservation work is built on public support and sound scientific principles to protect Mount Diablo and its foothills. We base our work on the values of respecting the land, collaborating with others, empowering citizens and balancing economic growth and livable communities. Our 14 member Board of Directors and 15-member staff work effectively to protect and restore these lands, and are supported by more than 8,000 individual donors and 200 local businesses, corporations and foundations. In addition to our staff, our dedicated volunteers are central to our ability to accomplish our mission. Each year we engage hundreds of volunteers who contribute more than 15,000 hours of work. To accomplish our mission we: • Preserve natural lands through direct acquisition, easements, and cooperative efforts with public agencies, other land conservation organizations and private landowners. Although in the past, we purchased land and transferred it to a public agency, we now plan for acquisition and long term management. Our general priorities for land acquisition include the protection of wildlife corridors and the connection and expansion of public lands. • Defend Mount Diablo and its foothills from threats of development. We are active in land use planning and monitoring development proposals that affect open space around Mount Diablo. We work at a local, regional and state wide level on policy issues affecting land use and preservation. • Restore habitat on lands we acquire prior to transfer to a public agency for permanent preservation and public use. Our staff and volunteers carry out a variety of stewardship activities such as debris and invasive species removal, reestablishing native plants and recreational trail building. • …So current and future generations can Enjoy Diablo's parks and wildlife through public education, events, and recreational opportunities consistent with the protection of natural resources. We host an active calendar of events ranging from guided hikes to trail runs and we publish trail maps and audio guides for all to enjoy. We strive to educate the public regarding threats to the mountain and about the natural and cultural history of the area. The Call to Action Reassembling the Diablo wilderness means safeguarding our water, air and quality of life, one acre at a time. Many generous individuals and organizations have committed their financial resources and personal energy towards protecting this landscape. However, we need others to join us in this effort to save the mountain as a means of ensuring our community’s quality of life, for our children and for future generations. Because once these lands are gone, they are gone…forever. Please visit our website for more information www.SaveMountDiablo.org. Help us piece together this spectacular landscape… and secure its existence in the future.
