Mission Statement
MADD’s mission is to end drunk and drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking.
About This Cause
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has been a trailblazer in the fight against drunk driving since its founding in 1980. As one of the most successful public health and safety organizations in the US, MADD's advocacy and grassroots efforts have played a pivotal role in transforming public perceptions and enacting life-saving legislation. Our impact has been significant, leading to the introduction of stricter drunk driving laws, the adoption of ignition interlock devices for convicted offenders, and the lowering of the legal blood alcohol concentration limit. Since MADD’s inception, drunk driving is down 50%. MADD's story reflects the best of social impact organizations growing grassroots activism to create change. After over 40 years, MADD has saved more than 400,000 lives, served nearly 1 million victims (about the population of Delaware), and is showing no signs of slowing down - our goal, to reach a world of no more victims. Despite the remarkable progress of reducing drunk driving fatalities, we are devastated to again find ourselves amid a crisis on our nation’s roadways. Drunk driving caused 13,384 deaths or 31% of all traffic fatalities in 2021, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Overall, 42,939 people died in traffic crashes in 2021 – up 10% over 2020 and the largest spike in the history of NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System that dates back to 1975. Alcohol-related deaths jumped to more than 13,000 for the first time since 2007. This follows a previous 14% rise in drunk driving deaths in 2021. Every life taken is another moment — another reason — to keep fighting to end this national tragedy.
