About This Cause

Founded in Santa Cruz, CA, in 1979, Life Lab has nurtured a culture of garden-based learning in the Central Coast region and trained tens of thousands of educators across the U.S. Life Lab curriculum is used by educators serving millions of children nationally and internationally. Current Local Programs include: Pajaro Valley Unified School District School Garden Programs: • Weekly standards-based, hands-on environmental, science, cooking and nutrition programs in partnership with more than 130 teachers at Amesti, Ann Soldo, Hall District, HA Hyde, MacQuiddy, Ohlone, and Starlight Elementary Schools, serving more than 3,500 students • Close partnership with PVUSD on its districtwide Environmental Literacy Plan, curriculum, teacher training, and garden management • 8 gardens developed or renovated by our staff, interns and community volunteers and partners Blooming Classroom Field Trips (on a Watsonville farm): • Over 2,300 student visits from 11 PVUSD elementary schools in first three years, with 908 in 2018-19. • Enriched after-school programs each Tuesday, and 3-hour school day field trips each Thursday and Friday Garden Classroom (at the UC Santa Cruz Farm): • Field trips for grades 1-5 (3-hr) and PreK/K (75-min), serving 1,600+ students/year from 30+ schools in the region • 2-week summer day camps for 320 children age 4-14 (56 kids on site daily for 8 weeks) • Camp counselor-in-training program for ages 15-18 Internships for the Next Generation of Garden Educators: • Extensive training and mentoring for 80 interns annually, mostly college undergraduates, to work in our field trip programs and support local school garden programs Current National Programs include trainings for teachers in person and online, developing and sharing curriculum with schools and organizations across the country, and an annual School Garden Support Organization Leadership Institute. We serve over 1,000 educators per year, who report that their work touches the lives of over 500,000 students annually.
