Mission Statement
Theatre of Yugen is an experimental theatre company dedicated to the pursuit of the intangible essence of yugen. With a foundation in Japanese Noh drama and Kyogen satire, we create works of world theatre by crafting original material and exploring dramatic and literary classics. By presenting and collaborating we continue the evolution of live performance and foster intercultural understanding. And by training and educating we keep the legacy of theatrical discipline vital.
About This Cause
Founded in 1978 by Yuriko Doi, Theatre of Yugen has invested for over three decades in artistic exchange aimed at erasing perceived divisions between people. Our audiences include fans of experimental and movement-based theater, the Japanese traditional arts community, and educators and students of theater and Asian performing arts. In 2004, the Company received a Commendation by the Ministry of Japanese Foreign Affairs for “excellence in the pursuit of and promotion of a more improved understanding of Japan, its culture, and its people”. Theatre of Yugen has gained international recognition for both celebrating tradition and invoking experimentation. Our core value is a Japanese artistic notion called yugen, which describes a state of inner beauty and vibrancy perceived with all the senses, and which gives our work a distinctive style and provides a unique experience for our audience. The Company’s 35th Season included the world premieres of Emmett Till, a river and This Lingering Life, nominated for 8 TBA Awards. In our 2014/15 Season, the company will tour with Yuriko Doi’s Mystical Abyss to Colorado and present General Hogan and his Benjamin, a 3-part production beginning at Yerba Buena Night in downtown San Francisco and culminating with at the SF International Arts Festival at Fort Mason Center. Theatre of Yugen is the only theatre company in the United States that has consistently provided experiences in Noh-Kyogen theatre, sharing an appreciation for these forms with an increasingly diverse array of people. We are members of Theatre Bay Area, Network of Ensemble Theatres, the SF Bay Area Ensemble Consortium, the Association of Asian Performance, and offer discounts to these organizations as well as to community groups such as Asia Society, the Japan Society, and members of the Asian Art Museum. For over 20 years Theatre of Yugen has resided in and managed NOHspace, our venue in the historic Project Artaud in the heart of the Mission District in San Francisco. With our production offerings, presentations, and touring engagements, Theatre of Yugen at NOHspace serves over 5,000 audience members and dozens of artists annually, reaching out to Asian American communities as well as the broad range of ethnicities and ages that live in the Bay Area.
