Mission Statement

Our mission is to combine music and education to nurture, develop, and inspire students of all ages, and to provide essential support for the musical life of the community. For more than 40 years, Berkeley's Crowden Music Center, a nonprofit organization, has had a transformative influence on its students and the Bay Area cultural community.

About This Cause

Crowden's community programs division provides high quality music education, training and performance opportunities for students of all ages and skill levels. Crowden serves more than 4,000 individuals through a wide array of classes, workshops, rehearsals, concerts, and other events each year. Founded in 1983, Crowden's independent day school for children in grades three through eight (the first of its kind in the United States) provides a a rich, distinguished education centered around chamber music. The Crowden school's academic program is designed to help students achieve intellectual and emotional maturity through development of critical thinking, teamwork, and creativity. The comprehensive and collaborative music program includes technique classes, chamber music coaching in large and small ensembles, orchestra, and music history and theory. Curricula and school life are enriched by visiting professional artists from all over the world, including Yo-Yo Ma, the Kronos Quartet, and many others. Crowden has a deep commitment to ensuring access to its transformative music & academic education to under-represented minorities, with the long term hope and impact of changing the demographics of the broader classical music industry. More than half of Crowden's student body attend with the help of financial scholarships, made possible by grants and donations. Financial aid and demographic data: 1. The Crowden School served 41* students in 2022/2023. (*Enrollment decreased during COVID, and has returned to 54 students with increased enrollment projected for 2024-2025). 2. Of the 41 students in 2023, 22 (50%) received substantial financial aid, totaling $378,000. By comparison, the average percentage of students on financial aid across all Independent Schools is 26% (per National Independent Schools Association data). 3. Of the 770 students (of all ages) enrolled in Crowden community programs, 88 (11%) received financial aid, totaling $71,500. 4. Demographic breakdown at Crowden (similar data across both the School and Community Programs divisions) is as follows: white (34%), multi-racial (30%), Asian (24%), African American (4%), Hispanic (4%), Pacific Islander (4%). All funds raised through the Crowden Scholarship project go directly to support student tuition and fees, enabling access to a Crowden education.
