About This Cause
We are the San Francisco affiliate of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), one of more than 1,100 local affiliates known by its acronym NAMI or NAMI San Francisco. With some 200,000 members, NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots, volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with severe mental illnesses through advocacy and education efforts. We understand that mental illness deeply affects whole families; not just the person with an illness. NAMI SF is pleased to offer the following programs: -Family-to-Family Classes: a free, peer-led,12-week course for families, partners and friends of individuals with serious mental illness taught by trained NAMI family members and caregivers of individuals living with mental illness. Offered in English, Spanish, Cantonese and Mandarin. - BASICS : a free, 6-week, peer-led, psycho-education course for families and caregivers of teens and young adults. Offered in English and Spanish. - Advocating for Your Black Child : free, 8-week psycho-education series for Black parents and caregivers of Black children & teens (elementary-high school) living with mental health and/or learning differences. -Peer-to-Peer Classes: a free, 10-week, peer-led, recovery education course open to any person living with a mental health condition. -In Our Own Voice (IOOV): a unique public education presentation that offers insight into the hope and recovery possible for people living with mental illness. -Parents and Teachers as Allies: a two-hour in-service program focused on helping school professionals and families within the school community better understand the early warning signs of mental illnesses in children and adolescents. -Ending the Stigma: a 50-minute program designed for high school audiences devoted to giving students an opportunity to learn about mental illness through an informative PowerPoint, short videos, and personal testimony. - Mental Health 101 : educational program for community groups of all kinds - libraries, religious organizations, college students, and community-based organizations, among others. The goal of the presentation is to curb the stigma surrounding mental health, highlight mental health fundamentals, provide a space to connect around peer lived-experience, and share local resources and services. Alongside our standard presentation in English, our team offers Mental Health 101 in Cantonese and Spanish.
