Mission Statement

Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation is a nonprofit public charity corporation set up in the State of California on November 20, 1984. We are recognized by IRS as 501(c)3 exemption status. As to today, we have 9 regions and over 60 offices throughout the United States. Charity, Medical, Education, and Humanitarian are our four major missions.

About This Cause

Charitable service 1. Family services include short-term and long-term support. Tzu Chi provides financial, medical, spiritual, or special assistance in times of need. 2. Tzu Chi provides disaster assistance, such as 911 in New York by providing families with up to $1,000 in emergency cash, Hurricane Katrina in New Oreland by providing around $5,000,000, and 2007 Freeze Disaster in Northern California by provide baby formulas, diapers, blankets, and food. 3. Group home visits provide companionship to seniors on a regular basis when Tzu Chi volunteers visit neighborhood convalescent homes. Volunteers also visit other long-term care facilities such as the Ronald McDonald House, the New Start Homes and many others. 4. Services to the homeless include serving meals on a regular basis in cities of New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Phoenix, Chicago, and Honolulu etc. 5. During the winter holidays, Tzu Chi visit hundred of individuals, families and seniors living on their own to deliver holiday care packs, gift baskets, blankets and other necessities. 6. The community support program works with neighborhood organizations to meet needs of individuals and families. Tzu Chi provides financial assistance and gives daily necessities such as backpacks, shoes and uniforms to neighborhood schools and local organizations to help families who cannot afford these basics. 7. Gift of Books program gives new books to children of inner-city public schools whose families may not be able to afford additional reading materials. 8. Tzu Chi Scholars is a national scholarship program that recognizes and assists outstanding high school graduates in need of financial aid. 9. Everybody Reads is volunteer program designed to match adults with small group of school children to help inspire their love of reading. Medical Services 1. Free Clinic is to provide one stop free medical services including laboratory testing works, x-ray service, vision care, eye glasses support, limited denture supports, social service consultation and assistance. Free Clinic services are available at Alhambra, California, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Flushing, New York. 2. Mobile Clinic offers free dental services, oral and minor surgical to low income school districts students and migrant farmers in Southern California. The mobile clinic is setting on “Ta-Ai Mobile Van”. 3. Community Clinic provides medical services to family in needs in general, including work with family members to assist them to find resources for advanced medical treatment, offer preventive educational program to educate the community etc. 4. Alternative Medicine Clinic is to provide Chinese medicine treatment to the general public. Currently, the alternative medicine clinic is located in Alhambra, California. 5. Senior Rehabilitation and Dental Clinic is in Wilmington, California. This project is in architect planning processing and will be opened in November 2008. 6. Dental Clinic will be opened to the public in November 2007. The purpose is to provide affordable dental services to the general public. 7. Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) is made up of 2,000 medical professionals and civilians who volunteer their expertise and time toward providing qualify medical services in their own communities, whether urban or rural and worldwide. TIMA’s current services include consultation, outreach, health fair, workshop, seminar, and New Orleans Mental Health Clinic to Katrina victims. Education 1. Tzu Chi Academy is a weekend school which provides Chinese language instruction and humanities courses to students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. 2. Great Love Preschool and Kindergarten is a certified preschool and kindergarten to provide both English and Chinese languages instructions and humanities courses to students. 3. Community Education Development program to teach flower arrangement, tea tasting, and vegetarian cooking. Humanitarian Development 1. To inspire compassion among all human beings, Tzu Chi’s magazines, books, and television programs are dedicated to documenting stories of real people living real lives 2. Jing Si Books Store, located in Tzu Chi offices carry books, magazines, videotapes and music from the Tzu Chi Culture Publishing Company in Taiwan
