Mission Statement

Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area grants life-changing wishes for local children with critical illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.

About This Cause

The Greater Bay Area chapter of Make-A-Wish was founded in 1984 by local community members inspired to make a difference for suffering children. Today, we grant over 400 wishes a year in the Greater Bay Area alone. Our chapter was named among "America's Best" charities by Independent Charities of America. Of every dollar raised, over $.80 goes directly towards granting a magical wish for a local child. Our chapter serves 17 Bay Area counties from Monterey to the Oregon border. Your funds will go directly towards supporting ill children in your local community. Our mission is to create life-changing wishes for local children aged between 2½ and 18 who are diagnosed with a doctor-certified critical illness, which is defined as a chronic, progressive, degenerative or malignant condition that places the child's life in jeopardy. Children qualify without regard to race, gender, or socio-economic background. A wish also has been shown to enhance the child's social, mental and physical health and benefit the whole family. Over 70% of doctors and parents observe an improvement in the child’s health status after a wish, and over 85% observe an improvement in their emotional well-being.
