About This Cause

Our Mentoring Services provides mentors and enrichment activities to local youth-in-need so they may reach their full potential. Our 1-to-1 Mentoring Program matches mentees ages 8 – 17 with adult mentors who meet with them in the community. Our School-Based Programs host group mentoring sessions for students making the transition into high school. We support these “Friendships” through a unique combination of enrichment activities, resources, and ongoing and individualized staff support. Our Mentoring Institute helps youth-serving agencies provide safe and quality mentoring services to youth-in-need. We share what we have learned in our high-quality Mentoring Services program with others locally, nationwide, and even internationally. Trainings, products, coalitions, networking, and a mentoring conference disseminate the latest research and promote best practices. HISTORY: Since 1979, Friends for Youth has been focused on one thing: Improving the lives of at-risk youth. Our reputation is built on creating quality matches and sustaining these matches through extensive training and support services. Mentoring can help youth overcome challenges of unstable or stressed families, unsafe neighborhoods, prior abuse or neglect, risk for gang involvement, parental incarceration, lack of opportunities for extracurricular activities, and academic, social, emotional, and behavioral issues. The Mentoring Services program has directly helped nearly 2,000 youth-in-need reach their full potential. The program has a 90% success rate of creating long-term mentoring matches, which is far above the national average. Leading mentoring researcher Dr. Jean Rhodes has called Friends for Youth “the gold standard in the mentoring field.” Our unique combination of direct services and support for other mentoring agencies, and by extension more youth, has made us an innovator in the mentoring field. Our SAFE: Screening Applicants for Effectiveness book, trainings, and certification are recognized by mentoring professionals as essential child abuse prevention tools. Since 1998, the Mentoring Institute has impacted more than 2 million youth.
