Mission Statement

SUPPORT PFLAG provides a safe and confidential place for you to talk; whether you are dealing with feelings about a loved one being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, or you are dealing with family about your own sexual orientation or gender identity. EDUCATION We promote education and outreach to our communities so that we can create a more accepting and safe environment for our children, families and friends who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning or intersex. ADVOCACY PFLAG advocates for LGBT and gender expansive people by working for inclusive civil rights legislation and legal protection. We support their right to be free from discrimination and fear at work, in housing and in school. We advocate for full equality and legal recognition of same gender relationships, including the right to marry.

About This Cause

WHO WE ARE • We are a diverse volunteer organization of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people, those who are gender expansive, and their parents, family, friends and allies. • PFLAG San Francisco (www.pflagsf.org) was started in 1976 and is a chapter of the national organization, PFLAG, Inc. (www.pflag.org). • Our chapter works cooperatively with other chapters in the Bay Area and Northern California. We also work with other support organizations to promote the health and well being of LGBT and gender expansive individuals. • In addition to conducting monthly support meetings, we conduct community outreach by hosting information booths at street fairs and community celebrations. We also provide speakers for schools, churches and civic groups. • PFLAG is not affiliated with any faith or religious organization. However, many of our members have experience in reconciling their faith with the discovery that their loved one is LGBT or gender expansive. • PFLAG is a registered 501(c)3 organization and is not affiliated with any political organization. WHAT WE KNOW • Families are unique and there is diversity in every aspect of our lives. When parents learn that their child is LGBT or gender expansive, they may feel guilt, anger, sadness or fear for the future of that child. Every reaction is different and valid. • Know that you are not alone. The latest data shows that there are over 8 million people who self-identify as LGB, and another 700,000 who are transgender; all of whom have families. Currently there are over 350 PFLAG chapters where families can turn for support. • It is important to know that the American Psychiatric and Psychological Associations have recognized that there is natural diversity in human sexual orientation and gender identity. • Sexual orientation and gender identity is a spectrum and although we cannot choose where we are on that spectrum, to be anywhere on that spectrum is as natural and healthy as being left handed, right handed or ambidextrous. • While you can’t control your reaction, you can control your response. Research by Dr. Caitlyn Ryan of the Family Acceptance Project shows that a positive supportive response reduces a child’s risk for both physical and mental health problems.
