Mission Statement
Harmony Hill Retreat Center, located in Union, WA, with breathtaking views overlooking Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains, was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1986 with a focus on general wellness and small group meeting facilities. In 1994, we added our Cancer Program, the heart of our mission, to provide support for those affected by a cancer diagnosis, including survivors, co-survivors, caregivers, and health care professionals. In 2004, a bold decision was made to offer our Cancer Program components at no cost to participants. Today, with a mission “to transform the lives of those affected by cancer and to inspire healthy living for all,”
About This Cause
Harmony Hill began with Gretchen Schodde’s dream to create a retreat center where people could experience renewal and deep well-being. In 1986, Harmony Hill opened its doors as a small nonprofit retreat facility focused on wellness. In 1994, we added our Cancer Program, the heart of our mission, to provide support for those affected by a cancer diagnosis including caregivers and health professionals. In 2004, our cancer-related programs became free for all participants. Today, Harmony Hill serves thousands of visitors each year through our many programs, including those living with cancer, those who seek a retreat away from their daily lives or those who want to make healthy changes in their lifestyle. We also rent out our buildings/facilities to individuals and groups and offer everything from personal retreats to conferences, and are known for our generous hospitality and nurturing staff, as well as our delicious meals and spectacular site. Harmony Hill offers the only program in the Pacific Northwest to provide residential renewal retreats at no cost to those affected by cancer. The purpose of the Cancer Program is to provide hope, healing, and change to reduce symptoms and promote overall well-being as individuals face their diagnosis and learn to live each day richly along their cancer journey, whether they are a survivor themselves, a caregiver (or co-survivor) or someone who has lost a loved one to cancer. OUTCOMES Harmony Hill believes in standards of excellence for its direct service, administrative and support staff. Ongoing surveys of cancer Program participants are administered prior to participation in our programs and within two months of departure from the program. The surveys are the evaluation tools we must have in place in order to better meet the needs of the diverse range of cancer patients – by gender, diagnosis, current health status and other factors. Through the surveys we are able to determine what changes occur within the lives of our participants as a result of our programs by their level of improvement in four primary areas: •Connection to self and others •Self-care and personal health •Pleasure in life •Healing and wellness Participants in Harmony Hill Cancer Retreats post-retreat surveys reported between 37 and 55 percent increases or improvement in various elements of the primary areas listed above after participating in Harmony Hill Cancer Retreats. The surveys measure overall participant improvement and to inform program and facility improvements as indicated by information provided in the surveys.
