We also provide English as a Second Language programs throughout the year focusing on conversational skill-building. About This Cause

The Oakland Catholic Worker was founded in 1986 as a transitional shelter offering assistance for Latin Americans fleeing the brutal civil wars in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Guests and their families may stay up to 4 months. Meanwhile the staff accompanies our guests helping them find social, medical, legal and educational services. We also help our guests identify employment opportunities and more permanent shelter. We also provide English as a Second Language programs throughout the year focusing on developing students conversational capacities. Our guests and neighbors in our East Oakland neighborhood are encouraged to participate. Finally, we offer two different food programs. On Mondays and Wednesdays we provide various types of hot food to anyone who comes to our door between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. On Thursdays we host a neighborhood grocery distribution with assistance from the Alameda County Community Food Bank. We provide fresh fruits and vegetables, canned foods, bread, tortillas and dairy products depending on what the ACCFB can provide us.
