STORE TO DOOR

Mission Statement

Store to Door supports independent living for Portland area seniors and people with disabilities by providing an affordable, personal, volunteer-based grocery shopping and delivery service. We envision the Portland area to be a community where all seniors and people with disabilities are nourished, included, and can age with dignity in the setting of their own choice.

About This Cause

Store to Door was founded in 1989 when people living in low-income senior housing in Northwest Portland who were unable to shop on their own spoke out about their need for assistance. Many received other services, but needed food, medications, and household items to remain healthy and in their own homes. Working with the neighborhood grocery store and senior center, the founders recruited volunteers to help take orders, shop, and make deliveries. The service began with five volunteers serving 25 clients in the Northwest Portland neighborhood. In 2018, our grocery delivery and friendly visitation service served 682 clients with the support of 1,588 volunteers. The service area has expanded to serve people throughout Multnomah County and the City of Beaverton. Store to Door is the preferred grocery assistance provider of Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services, and we partner with the County to serve low-income people who qualify for Oregon Project Independence (OPI, assistive services for adults with disabilities) and SNAP. We also participate in the County’s Gatekeeper program, an organized outreach effort designed to identify, refer, and respond to at-risk seniors and people with disabilities living in our community.
