We provide transformative wilderness experiences that grow a community of environmental advocates.

About This Cause

Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a base of operations in the historic mining town of Jawbone Flats in the Opal Creek Wilderness Area and an administrative office in Portland, OR. Jawbone Flats is privately-owned and maintained, and is surrounded by federal land managed by the Detroit Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service. For decades, our classroom sat at the heart of one of the last remaining low-elevation old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest. We connected learners of all ages with transformative educational experiences in lush, wild old-growth conifer forests. Our outdoor school programs, overnight workshops, wilderness medicine trainings, youth backpacking trips, and cabin rentals immersed visitors in the ecology of the watershed. In 2020, the Opal Creek Ancient Forest was itself transformed by the Beachie Creek wildfire. 25 of 28 building on our campus were lost. We are discovering and learning within our new post-fire landscape, deriving how to teach different lessons about forest ecology, and striving to rebuild a vibrant and resilient new facility on our inholding. We believe conservationism and passionate advocacy arises from a foundation of understanding and love. To care about the environment and wild places, you first must experience and learn from these places. You must be transformed by them. We provide these transformative opportunities!
