Mission Statement

IMPACT offers violence-prevention programs for people to embody their own power, set effective boundaries, defend their physical and emotional safety, and heal. We build safe spaces for people who experience and resist violence differently because of who they are or how they are perceived, like women, youth, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, etc.

About This Cause

Impact Bay Area has three decades of evolving expertise in teaching effective self-defense skills in a safe environment. Our students keep themselves and others safe using those skills. Impact Bay Area is a nonprofit because we believe that personal safety should be a right, not a privilege. The skills Impact teaches are 1) accessible to almost anyone, regardless of age or level of fitness; 2) easy to learn in a short time; 3) available under adrenaline; and 4) learned in such a way that they become part of muscle memory. Our instructors understand that self-defense can be intimidating and are experts in creating a safe environment. Our classes are taught by a lead female instructor and a male instructor who wears specially designed armor that keeps him safe while taking full-force blows, and keeps students safe when delivering those blows. And our instructors are trauma-informed so that people who have been victims of assault or abuse feel safe in our classes. We offer classes for kids (ages 6-8 and ages 9-11), teens (ages 12-16), young adults (ages 16-22), adults (ages 18+), and LGBTQ adults (ages 18+). Our full-length class for young adults and adults is 24 hours long, which provides enough practice that skills become part of muscle memory, like riding a bicycle, so they are available even years later. We also offer 3-hour all-gender introduction to self-defense classes for adults. IMPACT Bay Area never turns anyone away from our classes for lack of funds.
