Mission Statement

At Portland YouthBuilders (PYB), our goal is to help young people break the cycle of poverty. Through our combination of academics, vocational training, leadership development, and long term support, we provide youth aged 17-24 with the skills and confidence to make significant positive changes in their lives.

About This Cause

Portland YouthBuilders (PYB) offers a multi-year program of education, vocational training, community service, leadership development, and long term support to 200 very low income youth each year. Our program, which includes a first year of full-time programming and multi-year graduate support, gives youth in poverty the opportunity to develop the tools necessary to pursue college and/or entry level jobs in the construction trades and apprenticeship programs, the technology field, or other careers. PYB students are highly barriered youth whose crisis-oriented lives lack stability and structure. All students have dropped out of high school; most have dropped out or been expelled multiple times. All students live in poverty. Over 80% have histories of substance abuse; over 50% have had contact with the criminal justice system; 25% are custodial parents. Our students leave PYB having completed high school and with trade skills in construction or computer technology, prepared for jobs, college, or other advanced training.
